A Modest Multilingual Proposal

Posted by 19 de November de 2021

By Alan James Runcieman

The article entitled ‘Proposal for a ‘Translanguaging Space’ in Interpreting Studies: Meeting the Needs of a Superdiverse and Translanguaging World’ has recently been published in the John Benjamins Journal, Translation and Translanguaging in Multilingual Contexts.

Globalization and migration have impacted the social fabric of urban centres globally, creating a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual mix of peoples who cohabit on a daily basis; a phenomenon that has come to be known as ‘superdiversity’. In turn this superdiversity has created multiple ‘contact zones’ in which languages and cultures interconnect, leading to new forms of linguistic expression which no longer respect the boundaries of languages, but rather mix and meld them in critical and creative ways. The nationalistic ideology of ‘one nation, one language and one culture’ is ceding to what we now call ‘translanguaging’, a perspective on language and cultures not as a series of individual entities (i.e. English, French, etc.) but all part of a fluid and hybrid interchange of multiple semiotic resources in situated contexts.

A translanguaging lens has begun to emerge in many disciplines (i.e. Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Literacy Studies, to name but a few) but it is still relatively in its infancy in Translation and Interpreting Studies. Indeed, interpreting in particular has been slow to react, maintaining a rigid monolingual approach to languages, i.e. LA-LB etc. in its pedagogy, where interpreters are positioned as bridging individual, discrete and bounded languages and cultures. But what happens when these bridges begin to breakdown, when the focus is rather on the multi-lingual/cultural currents that flow beneath them? The majority of interpreters’ clients are no longer mono-lingual/cultural and their consequent identities are far more complex.

This article then describes the history of translanguaging as an observed social phenomenon, an epistemological and ontological concept, and a pedagogical necessity. It also explores how Translation and Interpreting Studies has evolved under a monolinguistic bias which needs to be challenged by a recognition of superdiversity in late-modernity, and it proposes concrete changes to pedagogies and curricula to help prepare students for their future professional lives.

WhatsApp, a tool for language learning

Posted by 1 de February de 2021

By Àngels Pinyana

Technological advances have made mobiles more efficient, user friendly, and adaptable to different purposes. As mobile devices have become more ubiquitous, so have the mobile apps and social networking sites that aim to help teachers and students take advantage of such ubiquity. According to different authors, these apps promote interaction among users, fostering collaborative learning and improving motivation, and they also seem to boost vocabulary knowledge. However, it is the portability of the mobile devices themselves, and above all, the capacity to erase the physical and temporal limits of the classroom, what makes mobile learning especially suitable to study at anytime and anywhere, both for formal and informal learning.

Instant messaging applications in particular, like WhatsApp, appear to have great potential for educational purposes mainly because of the type of communication and discourse they produce. In terms of communication, WhatsApp facilitates quick and interactive multimedia exchange of information either in one-to-one or in closed-group interactions in real time, synchronically or quasi-synchronically, while being physically distant. And in terms of discourse, WhatsApp generates a type of discourse that not only incorporates features of both written and oral varieties of the language, but it also may combine visual, verbal and acoustic elements. All of this conforms WhatsApp as a rich setting for multimodal communication to occur.

The article “Extending language learning beyond the EFL classroom through WhatsApp” by Elsa Tragant, Àngels Pinyana, Jessica Mackay and Maria Andria, published in Computer Assisted Language Learning (2021), explores the type of communication produced by a group of foreign language learning students when they voluntarily engage in different language learning tasks, initiated by the teacher, in a WhatsApp group. The study describes how the language tasks were enacted, how the chat was also used for informal communication among peers and with the teacher, as well as how negotiation and participation in the chat evolved over time.

The analysis of the messages produced showed that many of the students in the group voluntarily practiced the target language outside class time and engaged in real communication through their mobile devices. The fact that the chat was voluntary did not stop students from showing high levels of engagement in performing these tasks, often producing long, pragmatically appropriate messages and extended conversations. The longitudinal analysis of the data, however, revealed that participation fluctuated across tasks, and that the WhatsApp group, over time, became a means of informal, off-task communication, which the teacher had not planned. Spontaneity and authenticity were evident in these off-task conversations and resulted in increased rates of participation.

All in all, instant messaging seems to be a relevant pedagogical resource that is worth considering when designing foreign language courses that aim at promoting L2 use, as the messages generated both when students are completing a teacher-initiated task, or when they are communicating off-task, seem to be equally productive in engaging students to use English beyond the walls of the classroom.

Lydia Brugué i Judith Sánchez van presentar la comunicació “Restoring the Telling of Death: How Disney’s Moana Empowers Children’s Understanding of Passing and Reincarnation”, i Sarah Khan va presentar “Two sides to the story”.

The Magic of Communication

Posted by 7 de November de 2019

In the last years Catalan audiences have observed how Catalan and Spanish newspapers tend to differ in the information they publish on the same event, particularly when the item of news is about political issues associated with Catalan independence. In these situations, media actors, namely Catalan and Spanish journalists, are coerced to stand in for the interests of their employer’s beliefs and, unfortunately, they cannot be blamed for that. We all admit that the media products that we listen to, watch or read, are not the real events, but representations of them. Journalists construct these representations out of different meaning triggers, such as photographs, video footage or text (language) that, because of their very nature, magnify the effect of the portrayed sections of the event and obliterate other parts of the event by not mentioning them. Acting this way, journalists are prone to report on one same event favouring specific ideological standpoints and, therefore, biasing, and sometimes misrepresenting, the event. How can this slanted coverage of the news be so and still be fair and truthful? Some may say that human communication is imperfect, faulty or incomplete. Others may argue that this is the magic of communication. Beyond what we think of it, the codification of reality into text, photographs or footage is a very complex venture, particularly when we need to persuade the receiver to interpret a specific message.

This is what Calle Rosingana (2019) discusses in his article In Search of Meaning: ‘The Hours’ and Meaning Construction, published by Círculo de Lingüística Aplicada a la Comunicación, Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The discussion in the article is not centred on the context of politics, though. Instead, it has a cinematic feel since what is analysed is a short scene of the movie The Hours (2002), by Stephen Daldry. However, the article identifies the way in which certain meanings originate from the participation of a multiplicity of cues that emerge from different modalities (language, sound and image) that interweave and collaborate to reach the same end, the construction of meaning. The analysis draws from the implementation of specific linguistic and cognitive mechanisms that trigger the generation of the audience’s unconscious construction of meaning. The corpus of the analysis dissects an excerpt of David Hare’s script of the movie, that acts as the backbone of the analysis. The analysis is cross-referenced with parallel modality inputs (Kress 2009), such as specific filmic or visual details, found either in the scene or the rest of the movie. The approach of this qualitative study is mainly cognitive making special emphasis on the three types of underspecification proposed by Radden (2007). It also draws from Langacker’s (2008) proposals related to attention and perspective to identify figure-ground relations as determinant in the moulding of the characters and their ideological standpoints in the scene. Lakoff’s (2003) conceptual metaphor theory and the application of the theory of mental spaces (Fauconnier 1994, 1997) and conceptual integration (Fauconnier and Turner’s 2002) are also of particular interest to explore metaphorical conceptions and blends.

Gemma Delgar y Lucrecia Keim presentaron el póster “Interactive resolution of online speaking tasks in additional languages of French and German”.
