Researchers Susanna Bodoy and Alba Casellas from FCTE represented UVic-UCC at the 11th International MetNet Meeting in Barcelona, where they presented their latest research on Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) regulation and strengthened international scientific collaboration in the field of metabolism and health.

LAT2 has a critical role in regulating Gln efflux from skeletal muscle. The absence of LAT2 led to elevated intracellular Gln levels, impairing muscle proteolysis by inducing mTORC1 recruitment to the lysosome. Further, chronic Gln accumulation and decreased proteolysis were found to induce the early onset of an age-related muscle phenotype.

Els resultats de l’estudi mostren que la capacitat resolutiva dels macròfags en l’aterosclerosi depèn de la captació de glutamina a través del transportador SLC7A7, que alimenta la glutaminòlisi a través de GLS1. La deleció específica de Slc7a7 en els macròfags redueix l’entrada de glutamina, altera el metabolisme cel·lular, disminueix la producció d’ATPs i, contribueix a una progressió més agressiva de l’aterosclerosi. Finalment, també es demostra que la reprogramació metabòlica i transcripcional dels macròfags es modula per la degradació de glutamina, afectant la remodelació de la matriu extracel·lular i la estabilitat de les plaques.
