SOS-Fartet: a project to improve the conservation status of the Iberian toothcarp, an endangered fish species
The Iberian toothcarp (Aphanius iberus) is a small cyprinodont fish (≤ 5cm) with external sexual dimorphism and short longevity (age up to 2+) with strong euryhaline and eurythermal character. It is and endangered species endemic of the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, and nowadays is a strictly protected species by Spanish and European laws. The main threats for its conservation are: habitat destruction and degradation, the presence of an exotic invasive species and the isolation of the last populations.
The SOS-Fartet project was funded by Fundación Biodiversidad from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment and it aimed to determine the current conservation status of the Iberian toothcarp and its habitat in the coastal wetlands of the natural parks “Els Aiguamolls de l’Empordà” and “El Montgrí, Illes Medes and Baix Ter” (Girona, NE Iberian Peninsula). This one-year project has been leaded by the Aquatic Ecology Group of the Faculty of Science and Technology. Results obtained in this project will contribute to the conservation of aquatic biodiversity, which has been declining worldwide for decades. This is also one of the main objectives of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020.
