The Chair in Agroecology and Food Systems was created in July 2015 at the UVIC-UCC.

Areas of work

The Chair will include teaching activities, applied and innovation research, knowledge transfer and scientific dissemination. The Agroecology and Food Systems Chair will focus on the following areas of work, among others of interest for the agroecological sector:

  • Study of agroecological food systems as complex socioecological systems.
  • Promotion of environmentally sustainable and socially fair agri-food systems.
  • Systematization, facilitation and stimulation of agroecological processes.
  • Research focused to answer the needs of people involved in agroecological practices, such as short distribution channels, artisan food transformation, etc.
  • Study, recovery, promotion and visualization of local traditional knowledge, as a tool to promote sustainable development, climate change adaptation and food security.
  • Promotion, study and dissemination of rural heritage, including agricultural landscape.
  • Study and diffusion of healthy and sustainable food consumption practices.
  • Promotion of the right to food
  • Study of the relationship among agroecology and food security and sovereignty.
  • Study and diffusion of the role of women and youth in agri-food systems, particularly in agroecological food systems.
  • Generation of collaboration networks, including support to agroecological processes and entrepreneurs, and social movements involved in agroecology and food sovereignty.
  • Development and application of innovative research and communication methodologies.
  • Transversal integration of gender perspective in all the work areas described above and, particularly, study of the links and contributions of ecofeminism to agroecology.
