On October 31, as part of the doctoral program in medicine and biomedical sciences, Verónica Salgado Pacheco defended her doctoral thesis titled “Multidimensional Analysis for Personalized Therapy with Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma in Patients with Complex Wounds.” This research was conducted within research line of “Mechanisms of Tissue Repair and Regeneration” and was supervised by Dr. Marta Otero and Dr. Ramon Oller.
The jury, composed of Dr. José Verdú from the University of Alicante, Dr. Elisabet Selga Coma from UVic-UCC and Dr. Pedro Luís Pancorbo Hidalgo from the University of Jaén, awarded the doctoral thesis the highest academic distinction, Excellent Cum Laude.
In the words of the new doctor “This thesis contributes to personalizing the use of autologous PRP in complex skin wounds, identifying patient and wound characteristics that influence its effectiveness. Furthermore, it identifies angiogenesis as a key cellular process in the success of this therapy”.
This tesis has been developed as part of the project titled: “Observational study: correlation between the composition and the in vitro functionality of the autologous platelet rich plasma with the healing evolution of chronic wounds treated with this therapy”. This project is funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación, y Universidades – Instituto de Salud Carlos III – Programa FEDER (PI19/01379).
Scientific publications included in this doctoral thesis:
- A Prospective Observational Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy for Complex Wounds: Influential Clinical Variables on Wound Healing Outcomes.
- Platelet-rich plasma therapy for chronic cutaneous wounds stratified by etiology: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials.
The doctoral thesis contributes to the sustainable development goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
