This research is funded by ESA’s Discovery Programme, via the EISI implementation mechanism,
and is developed by a consortium formed by the Universitat de Vic (UVic), the Universitat
Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the Spanish’s National Institute of Aerospace Technology
(INTA).

Topic:
Sun sensors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_sensor) are devices that are able to determine the
position of the sun by detecting the incidence angle of sun light relative to the sensor. They are used
in satellites for attitude estimation, fault detection and recovery. Typical sun sensors rely on the
ray-nature of light, usually involving windows that cast a shadow on top of photodetectors. In this
project we aim to develop a sun sensor based on the wave nature of light, avoiding the need of
apertures or precise plane positioning. This solution will be fully integrable and ideal for smallsats.
Tasks:
The predoctoral student will be involved in the study and development of the technology, in
particular on the design and simulation of interference filters and gratings structures, which are in
the core of the sensor idea. He/she will also participate in the fabrication and characterization of
said structures, which will be performed at UPC’s cleanroom laboratories. This wide approach is an
excellent learning opportunity on optics and photonics for sensors and space applications.
Requirements:
• Typical profiles: electrical engineers, electronic engineers, applied physicists,
telecommunication engineers. Other ICT profiles also possible.
• The candidates must have passed at least 60 ECTS of master level to be enrolled at the
doctoral school.
• In case you are studying a master now, the student can develop his/her master thesis in the
topic to gain experience and training.
• Computer skills and interest in optics and simulation will be very appreciated.
Offering: Research contract, with possibility of doctorate realization.
