On the 9th of May 2024, the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Engineering at the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia hosted an enlightening workshop titled “Engineering and Science for a Sustainable World.” Co-organized by MECAMAT, this event provided a platform for researchers, scholars, and students to delve into cutting-edge research and advancements in various fields.
The morning sessions featured presentations by esteemed experts and promising researchers, covering a diverse range of topics. From the integration of clinicians, knowledge, and data for healthcare decision support to the application of machine learning in wound care and video games, attendees gained valuable insights into innovative approaches to tackle pressing challenges.
Dr. Karina Gibert i Oliveras’s presentation on “Integrating clinicians, knowledge, and data: expert-based cooperative analysis in healthcare decision support.” Her expertise in intelligent data science and artificial intelligence shed light on innovative approaches to healthcare decision-making, sparking thought-provoking discussions among participants.
Dr. Miquel Aguirre’s session on computational mechanics and automatic learning for diagnosing and treating ischemic stroke showcased the intersection of engineering and healthcare, illustrating the potential of technology in improving medical outcomes.
Dr. Delfina Muñoz’s presentation on “Ecodesign strategies for photovoltaics” provided attendees with valuable insights into sustainable energy solutions. As a strategic project manager and senior researcher at the National Institute of Solar Energy (INES) in Grenoble, France, her expertise shed light on the importance of integrating ecodesign principles into the development of photovoltaic technologies, while PhD students presented their research on germanium devices, generative AI.
Dr. Cristina O’Callaghan’s session on “Planetary Health” resonated deeply with attendees, offering a compelling perspective on the intersection of environmental sustainability and human health. As an associated professor and researcher at UOC and ISGlobal, Dr. O’Callaghan’s insights into the complex dynamics of planetary health left a lasting impact on the audience, inspiring further exploration into this critical area of research.
The day concluded with a stimulating round table discussion on career paths, featuring distinguished panelists from academia and industry. Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts like Cristina O’Callaghan, Derek Latil, Anna Bigas, Diana Ballart, and Salva Ferré, gaining valuable insights into diverse career opportunities in the field.
Attendees were encouraged to register before April 26th to secure their spot and obtain a certificate of attendance.
