Assessing Emotional Wellbeing in UVic-UCC Community
The BENESTAR-e Project is a project aimed at the promotion, training and awareness of emotional well-being and mental health. It also aims to help both the detection and the accompaniment and support to people in situations of emotional distress and mental disorders or illnesses.
It is primarily aimed at improving emotional well-being in the UVic-UCC university community and investigates how university life and lifestyles influence the mental health and life satisfaction of both students and administrative staff and faculty.
University creates new demands, which, together with expectations for the future, increase feelings of stress. Students enter college with various personal, family, and academic skills and characteristics that influence their school performance. Personal and academic factors determine whether or not a student is successful or unsuccessful at the end of his or her professional career.
Previous research conducted by the team, known as BIGFIVE, revealed that 3.4% of first-year students experienced psychological distress and academic burnout simultaneously, while 23.3% reported psychological distress alone.
The emotional state of workers also affects their health. For years, the world of work has tended to underestimate the possible influence of emotional skills on the well-being of the people who are part of it. Emotions at work is a relatively new field of study. This study aims to measure the emotional well-being and mental health of the university community to serve as a basis for the development of promotion, training and awareness programs.
The study will adopt a quantitative, cross-sectional observational design. Data will be collected through the REDCap platform, using tools such as the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-SS) (MBI-GS), the Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS), life satisfaction (SWLS), the Alcohol Dependence Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), the Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet Study (PREDIMED) questionnaire among others to measure emotional well-being and lifestyle habits.
The impact of the project would cover 12,700 students and 2,200 staff members across various campuses, contributing to a better understanding of emotional well-being in academic settings.
The BENESTAR-e team is formed by Jaume Miquel March Amengual (PI) and Agustí Comella Cayuela in addition to some M₃O researchers from different health fields such as Joan Carles Casas Baroy, Josep Eladi Baños Díez, Ester Busquets Alibés, Marta Guimerà Gallent and Josep Valldeperez Alcalá.
The project has been funded by the AGAUR (Agency for the Management of University and Research GrantsThe project received funding from AGAUR (Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca), the Fundació Grífols: Càtedra de Bioètica and the University of Vic-UCC.
