Anthony Garner, the renowned cartoonist who has worked for prominent media companies such as El Punt Avui, El País, Punch, Private Eye, The New Statesman, The New York Observer, and El Jueves, delivered a speech to the students of UVic’s second-year Journalism during their Spoken English class.

In his address, Garner emphasized the significance of combining humor and critical thinking in his cartoons. He stated that humor has no limits and explained that making people laugh with humanity is crucial. Garner also advised that any topic can be covered with humor as long as it is not offensive to the majority of readers.

Garner identified politics, religion, racism, war, violence, gender equality, and LGTBIQ+ issues as the most controversial topics to draw about.
The speech concluded with Garner inviting the students to sketch a cartoon on a contentious topic of their choice. After the students finished their drawings, Garner, along with their instructor Emma, displayed the cartoons on the wall and invited the students to describe their artwork.

Garner commended the students for their diverse selection of topics and praised their creativity in each drawing.
