Marta Casals Zorita is a nurse specialized in complex wounds, with a professional career marked by innovation, research, and leadership in the field of care. She began her career in 2011 at the Hospital Universitari de la Santa Creu de Vic, in the Clinical Unit of Wounds and Palliative Care, where she developed advanced competencies in the management of patients with highly complex wounds.
She holds a Degree in Nursing (2011) and a Master’s Degree in Oncology Nursing (2012) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 2018, she completed the University Master’s Degree in Comprehensive Management and Research of Chronic Wounds at the University of Cantabria, where she presented the project “Efficiency of a telewound consultation in the treatment of leg ulcers in a Complex Wounds Unit,” later presented at a national congress. In 2021, she completed the Master’s Degree in Management and Leadership of Nursing Services at the Miguel de Cervantes University, with a study focused on patient experience in healthcare services. In 2019, she began her doctoral studies and, in March 2026, obtained her PhD with an Industrial Doctorate distinction and Cum Laude qualification from UVic-UCC, with the dissertation “Educational program to improve adherence to self-care recommendations for people with complex wounds in the lower limbs.”
Throughout her research career, she has participated in European projects —including two FIS projects— as well as national studies focused on improving health outcomes and innovating in wound management. She has contributed to scientific literature through various national and international publications and recently authored the article “Cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the Catalan version of the Wound-QoL-17 questionnaire,” published in a high-impact nursing journal.
She has also obtained competitive grants supporting the development of the research projects in which she is involved. Her work has expanded into the field of technology applied to health, contributing to the development of artificial intelligence–based tools for monitoring and decision-making in complex wounds.
She is currently the coordinator of the Functional Unit of Complex Wounds at CHV–FHSC, where she works to unify care protocols, establish territorial care pathways, promote multidisciplinary collaboration, and improve the quality of life and experience of people with complex wounds. She is accredited as an advanced-level expert in the treatment of complex wounds by GNEAUPP, reinforcing her status as a recognized reference professional in this field.
Her career reflects a strong commitment to continuous improvement of clinical practice, applied research, and a patient-centered model of care, positioning her as a leading figure in the evolution of complex wound nursing.

Participation in the 13th GNEAUPP Summer School

Last week, members of TR2Lab participated in the 13th Summer School of GNEAUPP (National Advisory Group for the Study of Pressure Ulcers and Chronic Wounds), held in Cuenca. This participation reflects the ongoing commitment of the Clinical Wound Care Unit of Hospital Universitari de la Santa Creu de Vic to research, innovation and excellence in the management of complex wounds. Within the scientific programme, Clara Masó and Marta Ferrer contributed to the workshop “Autologous Skin Micrografts: Elements for Discussion”, a theoretical session focused on this advanced therapeutic approach. Marta Casals Zorita presented her doctoral thesis at the International Nurses Day in Osona

Marta Casals, a member of TR2Lab, delivered a presentation on her doctoral thesis titled "Education program to improve adherence to self-care recommendations for people with complex wounds of the lower extremities" on May 12th. The event provoided an opportunity for professionals to meet and share experiences and insights regarding the nursing profession. The theme of the meeting was "Empowerment that saves lives: caring as nurses in the context of war and humanitarian crises".
