“Urinary Incontinence and Sedentary Behaviour in Nursing Homes in Osona” primary aim is to study the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) and its’ associated factors in nursing homes at Osona (Barcelona).
This is a multidisciplinary project that will also evaluate the health of geriatric residents in general and analyze other common problems among the elderly such as cognitive impairment, falls or nutritional aspects. It will also take into account parameters such as level of physical activity of the participants to understand the relationship between sedentary lifestyle and UI. Another of OsoNaH’s challenges is to understand the experience of elderly people living with UI in nursing homes, and also the experience of their carers.
Beyond the research objectives, the project seeks to contribute to the integral geriatric assessesment practice and to integrate it at the teaching in the university. It’s also intended to be the beginning of other future studies.
The research team, led by Javier Jerez-Roig, is composed of more than 20 people, including researchers from UVic-UCC, and undergraduate, master and doctoral students of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Welfare (FCSB). In addition, four international experts, including two from Glasgow Caledonian University.
The project has received two grants. First, the research grant from the Hestia Chair in Integrated Social and Health Care, which promotes teaching and research projects led by professionals, teams and institutions dedicated to the care of vulnerable people with high needs of social and health care. Second, from the Col·legi de Fisioterapeutes de Catalunya.
