Association between motor skills and sensory profile in children with typical and atypical development aged 4 to 11 years
The MOTISEN Project aims to evaluate the association between motor skills and sensory processing in children with typical and atypical development.
This is a cross-sectional observational study with a case-control design. A sample of children aged 4 to 11 years will be recruited, including those with typical development (control group) and those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or developmental coordination disorder (DCD) (case group). Participants will be recruited through specialised centres in the municipalities of Barcelona and Girona.
The data collection instruments will include:
- Movement Assessment Battery for Children – 2 (MABC-2): to assess fine and gross motor skills.
- Short Sensory Profile – 2 (SSP-2): to evaluate sensory processing in children.
The project is being conducted in collaboration with the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia, and is led by a multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in the field: Mirari Ochandorena (Principal Investigator), Sandra Rierola, Marc Terradas, Josan Merchán, Cristina Font, and Maria Sansó.
In addition, the project has received research funding from the Catalan Association of Physiotherapists (2024 call).
<<The project is currently in the recruitment and data collection phase.>>
This observational study is intended to serve as a foundation for future experimental research projects, focusing on the effectiveness of physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy interventions for children with atypical development. It also opens opportunities for doctoral thesis topics related to the theme and research line.
