SYMPOSIUM. Abandoned mines and water bodies: current status, environmental impacts and treatment options.

Within the framework of the LIFE DEMINE project, the BETA Technological Center from the University of Vic-Universitat Central de Catalunya organised a one-day symposium to explore the environmental impacts caused by abandoned mines on water bodies from a variety of perspectives.

The symposium, Abandoned mines and water bodies: current status, environmental impacts and treatment options, took place Wednesday, November 13, from 9:00 to 14:30 pm, in the Sala Segimon Serrallonga – Masia Torre dels Frares (UVIC-UCC).

The one-day symposium adressed the current environmental problem on freshwater ecosystems caused by abandoned mines throughout three different sessions: current status and public management of abandoned mines, environmental impacts on water bodies and treatment options for mining effluents. Speakers included representatives of public administration, researchers and companies specialized in water treatment. Each speaker gave a 15-minute presentation followed by a five-minute questions and answers. The full programme is available here!
