The fifth meeting of the Life DEMINE project took place in Vic (Barcelona) on 13th and 14th November 2019. The meeting, that counted with the participation of the five partners of the project, was organized the University of Vic.
During the meeting, we reviewed the progress of the project and the objectives to be attained in the next months. Elentec Ltd. and Swansea University explained us the performance of the LIFE DEMINE technology, currently operating in Frongoch abandoned mine, our demonstration site. We planned one open day in Frongoch, 28th April 2020, to show the performance of the new mining effluent treatment process to relevant stakeholders and residents, which will also serve as a platform to obtain different inputs and opinions about it.
At the same time, University of Vic presented the results obtained during the first sampling campaign performed in Frongoch in September, before the pilot plant implementation, to define the ecological status of watercourses downstream of the abandoned mine. These results showed a clear ecological impact caused by the metal mining effluent on the aquatic ecosystem. In this regard, we also planned the next sampling in Frongoch the efficiency of the technology in reducing this impact after its implementation. Finally, we also discussed about the next steps to be follow to implement the pilot plant in Germany next year.
