Project Description

Participating countries

UK, Spain

Participating institutions

  • Staffordshire University (Biomedical Sciences)
  • UVic-UCC (Participating degrees: Biomedicine)

Years running

2024

Goals
Develop deep knowledge of molecular biology applied to biomedical sciences by working collaborative to solve case studies.

Activities
This COIL project consists on online meetings of mixed groups with English and Spanish students to delve into the case study. It is based on a problem-based learning strategy, which implied reviewing the structure of the genetic information and gene expression processes as well as finding the biomedical strategy to solve the problem. Professors act as guides, leading the students in the solution of the case study. To help them, a total of 4 meetings are planned and the milestones that should be achieved in each meeting are established. Therefore, each student should look for the information to solve the questions raised for the next meeting and the meeting must be the space where they collaboratively share their knowledge and complete it in order to solve the proposed milestone. To ensure the engagement and the collaboration within the groups, the meetings are recorded so that in case of absence it is due to a justified reason. Finally, UVic-UCC students are asked to develop a poster and an oral defense of the work done.
