Hello! My name is Alex, and I am a freshwater ecologist specializing in conservation ecology. My research is currently focused on herpetology and the conservation of streams and ponds, with a keen interest in understanding both the environmental drivers and anthropogenic impacts on the biodiversity of these vital ecosystems

I obtained my B.Sc. in Environmental Biology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and had the opportunity to complete my studies as an exchange student at the University of Costa Rica. During my time there, I conducted research for my bachelor’s thesis, which focused on assessing the impacts of artificial lighting on marine turtles, a crucial conservation concern.

Following my undergraduate studies, I pursued my passion for animal biodiversity and conservation by obtaining a Master’s degree from the University of Valencia. For my thesis, I investigated the impacts of commercial fishing on the diet of the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), contributing to our understanding of the complex interactions between marine species and their environment.

I furthered my research endeavours by pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Girona, where I studied the impacts of damming, metal pollution, and climate change on the biodiversity of Pyrenean headwater streams. This research highlighted the importance of understanding and mitigating human-induced impacts on freshwater ecosystems, which are critical for maintaining biodiversity and supporting emblematic species such as the Pyrenean newt (Calotriton asper) and the Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus).

Currently, I am a member of the GEA team at UVic-UCC, where I am involved in the Ponderful project. My role in the project involves analyzing amphibian and fish environmental DNA (eDNA) data to better understand the environmental drivers of amphibian species richness across Europe, as well as investigating how anthropogenic impacts may influence amphibian populations.

As a researcher, I am committed to the practical application of scientific knowledge for the conservation and preservation of nature and its precious biodiversity in our rapidly changing world. Through my research, I strive to contribute to the development of effective conservation strategies and solutions that promote the long-term sustainability of our ecosystems.
