The research in Molecular Photopharmacology at the TR2Lab, directed by Dr. Xavier Rovira, is focused on the development of synthetic light-regulated drugs, which allow for the reversible activation or deactivation of specific target proteins in localized tissues with precise spatiotemporal control. To do so, a multidisciplinary approach is applied, in which molecular modelling, molecular pharmacology, microscopy and a medium/high-throughput in vivo testing is used. Our long-term objective is the study of the target activation mechanisms with photoswitchable molecules, which will enable the development of innovative therapies to manage complex pathologies with high efficacy and minimal side effects.
