The Biomedicine Workshops, organized by TR2Lab as part of the Educational Biomedicine Program, are a well-established scientific dissemination activity aimed at high school students. The primary goal of these workshops is to bridge the gap between high school science education and university degrees. Additionally, they provide an excellent platform for disseminating biomedical sciences, fostering scientific vocations, and channeling the curiosity and research initiatives of high school students.
Since the 2015-2016 academic year, more than 1,000 students from Osona and Vallès have had the opportunity to participate. Both teachers and students highly value several key aspects of the activity. Firstly, the workshop content is well-integrated into the Biology and Biomedicine curricula of the scientific-technical and biosanitary baccalaureate. Additionally, the research experience of the instructors provides a practical and enriching perspective, significantly enhancing the students’ educational experience.
During January, over 230 students from Osona and Vallès participated in one of two workshops offered at the Biosciences laboratories of the UVic-UCC Faculty of Sciences, Technology, and Engineering. The workshops focused on determining the human DNA genetic footprint using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique and the experimental analysis of human serum proteins through electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel. The sessions were led by Dr. Bet Sarri, tenured professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Cristina Bancells Bau, professor at the Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Laia Bosch-Presegué, professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences and Welfare. All three are researchers at TR2Lab, affiliated with the Institute for Research and Innovation in Life and Health Sciences in Central Catalonia (IRIS-CC), and actively involved in biomedical research at UVic-UCC.
This activity is supported by grants for the organization of scientific dissemination and research training activities for 2024 from the Office of the Vice-Principal for Research and Knowledge Transfer, with the collaboration of the UVic-UCC Scientific Dissemination Unit.
